A historic tavern thoughtfully restored into a vibrant dining destination, blending architectural character with contemporary hospitality design.

Revitalizing a Historic Landmark Through Hospitality Design
Copper Cock Tavern transformed a vacant historic downtown building into an upscale dining and cocktail destination that celebrates the character of its past while creating a memorable contemporary guest experience. Every design decision balanced historic preservation with the owner’s vision for a timeless restaurant that would become a destination within downtown Fond du Lac.
Working closely with the owner, I developed the interior concept around several meaningful elements that were integral to the project’s identity, including the signature copper cock weather vane, a baby grand piano, and the building’s historic barber pole. Original brick walls, soaring ceiling heights, rich materials, layered lighting, and custom millwork established a warm, sophisticated atmosphere, while flexible dining spaces, a VIP booth, and a three-sided fireplace enhanced both functionality and the guest experience. I also introduced the owner to a graphic designer whose branding work carried the interior design vision through the restaurant’s logo, menus, and visual identity.
The completed restaurant transformed an underutilized historic property into an award-winning destination that feels elegant, welcoming, and authentic. Recognized with Downtown Fond du Lac’s Design of the Year and Renovation of the Year awards, Copper Cock Tavern demonstrates how thoughtful interior design can honor a building’s history while creating an enduring sense of place.
